Update - Some users may be experiencing issues across both campuses with the network, primarily affecting:

• Wireless/Wifi services
• Network Servers: DNS, DHCP services

These issues were first reported on December 4 and UBC IT has worked with our vendor to apply the recommended fix. Services were restored, and issues reappeared this afternoon around 13:38.

The issue seems related to a routine maintenance upgrade. Our best option is to revert to the previous version of the hardware tonight at 23:00. Service will continue in a degraded state until 23:00 tonight.

There will be a planned Wi-Fi network outage during a scheduled maintenance window, estimated time 23:00-01:00. UBC IT will be working over the weekend implementing the hardware and monitoring the system.

• Duo Multi-factor Authentication (MFA)

Monitoring - A workaround has been put in place for this issue. This issue only impacts users who are obtaining a MATLAB license for the very first time (existing MathWorks account holders renewing licenses are not affected). Please see the link below to ensure the prerequisites are met before ordering a MATLAB license.

Identified - UBC IT has identified the issue and is working with the vendor on a workaround. Existing MathWorks account holders are not affected and are able to obtain MATLAB licenses.

Investigating - Some users are experiencing issues creating a new MathWorks account, which is required to obtain a MATLAB license. Users experiencing the issue are unable to create the MathWorks account even after using a UBC email address. UBC IT is investigating the issue with the vendor.

Scheduled Maintenance
On September 27, 2023, UBC IT will be decommissioning UBC’s secondary Virtual Private Network (VPN) service, myvpn2.ubc.ca. This service was initiated in 2020 to accommodate for increased demand of VPN when the University rapidly moved to remote teaching, learning and research due to Covid. With the increased capacity of UBC’s main VPN service (vpn.ubc.ca), and the current situation of UBC operating with in-person classes, myvpn2 is no longer required.

If you are currently using the secondary VPN, myvpn2.ubc.ca, please switch your AnyConnect client to UBC’s main VPN, myvpn.ubc.ca to continue connecting remotely. Instructions on how to connect to UBC’s main VPN can be found at https://it.ubc.ca/services/email-voice-internet/myvpn/how-access-myvpn

University Computer Management System (UCMS) Maintenance for Apple devices (Jamf Pro) will be undergoing routine maintenance on December 14, 2023 from 20:00 to 22:00 PT. During this time Apple devices will not be able to contact the server for updates, however no disruption to use of Apple devices is expected.

The Okanagan campus wireless network will undergo network maintenance on December 22, 2023 from 13:00-16:00 PT. During maintenance the wireless network will be periodically unavailable. Users are encouraged to use the wired network service, which will be unaffected.

Okanagan campus IT staff will be performing scheduled maintenance on the telephone system on December 27, 2023 between 10:00 and 12:00 PT. During this time, telephone services will be intermittently disrupted, including campus security urgent call line and 911. Campus security will have contingency plans in place with emergency services. We recommend the use of cell phones for any 911 emergency calls during this time.

Identified - OUTAGE: The Learning Tools Provisioning Service is currently unavailable due to an unforeseen connectivity issue. We are working with other UBC IT technicians to resolve the issue. Any changes to course enrolments in Canvas will be queued up accordingly and processed when the issue is resolved. The LTPS User Interface will not be available to instructional support staff and other departmental administrators until the issue is resolved.

A "New Teams" toggle switch will be visible at the top left of the Microsoft Teams client window. This will allow users to opt-in and try the new Microsoft Teams client which offers significant performance improvements and minor UI enhancements. Please allow 48hrs after release for the new client to become available.

Scheduled - Please be advised that the upgrade of Enterprise Active Directory (EAD) Domain Controllers (DCs) is underway. We will be upgrading to the latest version of Microsoft Windows Server. The new version of Windows has a better virtual integration that is more reliable, secure, and performant.

Users may require to re-authenticate with EAD if prompted by applications like FASMail, Teamshare, and Sharepoint.
